Guide
How much does your car cost per mile?
All the costs of a period, divided by the miles the odometer shows for that period.
The calculation
- Add every cost of the period: fuel or charging, service, insurance, tolls, parking, repairs.
- Take the distance from the odometer: the last reading of the period minus the last reading before it.
- Cost per mile = total cost ÷ distance.
Example
A year of $914.64 in fuel, $436.49 in service and $1,820.75 in other expenses makes $3,171.88. Over 9,400 miles on the odometer, that is $0.337 a mile.
What this leaves out
The price paid for the car and its loss of value are not running costs. Add them yourself if you want the full cost of owning it.
With Car Log
The Costs tab gives the total, the distance on the odometer and the cost per mile, for a month or a year. The very first fill-up of a log is left out of it, since that fuel was burned before the first odometer reading. See Cost report.
